1. Smile! Encourage a delightful experience when customers visit your store by having all cashiers, greeters, and store employees smile and welcome the customers. Smiling is contagious and your customers are more likely to return to shop for more in such a pleasant environment.

2. Be creative and think off the shelf. Experiment with new ways to display merchandise and ways to attract customers into your store. Times are changing and refreshing your store will give it a boost in the New Year.

3. Know your customers. Build good relationships with customers so you can know what products they prefer. When you can cater to their needs it shows you care about your customer and you’ll have what they want when they need it.

4. Be social! Pretty much everyone has a profile on a social network and you can network with existing and potential customers from your area by creating free accounts and posting on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. It encourages interaction with your customers.

5. Choose the right merchandise with the best turnover. Don’t just focus on your profit per piece, it is better to think of your total profit overall. The more you can turn over your merchandise, the more profit you can make. The merchandise that will turn over the most is the product your customers buy the most.

6. Get involved in community events and activities. You will not only feel good about helping out, but people in your community will remember your good deeds and look to give you business next time they are shopping for something you sell. Part of being that great neighborhood store is being a great neighbor.

A Maplewood Girl Scout troop leader and thousands of others participated in a bridging ceremony across the George Washington Bridge to mark the organization’s passage into its own next century.

As many as 2,500 Girl Scouts crossed the George Washington Bridge Sunday as part of an historic event sponsored by the Girl Scout Councils of New Jersey marking the 100th anniversary celebration of Girl Scouting.

Maplewood's Georgette Sullivan-Bauman was there. A Girl Scout troop leader, Sullivan-Bauman's girls are all now in college. Here's her report from the scene:

Although my Girl Scout Troop of 13 years went to college this year, I couldn't resist participating in this historic event. I drove to Ridgefield Park, where I parked and was shuttled 4 miles to Martha Washington Way. I had a 9 a.m. crossing time (times were staggered so the bridge was never overcrowded) so I went directly to the bridge. The enthusiasm among the attendees was amazing. Girl Scouts ranging from Daisies (5 and 6 years old) to Ambassadors (16 and 17 years old) and their leaders/chaperones were giddy with excitement. The walk across the bridge was very windy and cold, but no one seemed to mind. Everyone was taking photos and enjoying the beautiful views.

I could feel that Girl Scout camaraderie that makes scouting so wonderful! Once I walked back across the bridge to New Jersey, I stopped by the activity booths. The girls were busy making crafts, coloring uniforms on Girl Scout paper dolls, having their hair braided, scaling a rock-climbing wall, learning dance steps, taking zumba classes and more. The Hudson River Museum and Liberty Science Center had booths, too. I enjoyed the display of uniforms from the past. I saw one woman wearing one of the very first Girl Scout uniforms, complete with badges. Lunch was served in adorable (reusable) Flomo bags.

Another Maplewood mother of a Girl Scout told us her daughter's troop did not participate due to the $50 per person cost of the event.

New Jersey’s First Lady Mary Pat Christie was spoke after the Girl Scouts’ ceremonial “bridging” event, during which thousands of girls, parents and others walked across the bridge’s southern walkway, starting and ending in Fort Lee.

Earlier this month, the Port Authority lit the “necklace lights” on the George Washington Bridge green in honor of the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary; the green lights will continue nightly throughout the month of November, according to the Port Authority.

On Sunday, the Hudson River near the bridge was also dyed green in honor of the occasion.

Others scheduled to speak Sunday included President and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northern NJ Helen Wronski, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich; Bergen County Executive Kathe Donovan, Deputy Executive Director, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Bill Baroni.

In its second year in the fundraising industry, the Splendid® brand is planning to make a big splash with Holiday shop items at the upcoming 20th Annual AFRDS Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, Florida. January 6-9, 2012 fundraising suppliers and distributors will network over new fundraising items and services, attend workshops, and are invited to two networking receptions.

People of all ages get to dress up in any way they choose, children go trick-or-treating and everyone is able to take part in all kinds of parades, contests, and Halloween fun. The most popular way to celebrate the holiday is to throw a party.

Although it may seem like a lot of work, having a costume party is a great way to get together with friends, family, and have a spooktacular time! Plus, FLOMO has all the supplies to fuel a flawless celebration, removing any stress and replacing it with excitement. Getting Started

It's important to invite your guests at least three weeks in advance in order to ensure they do not make any other plans on the date of your party. Also, it’s always good to make your invitation memorable. In order to make your party easy to locate, display one of FLOMO’s yard signs in front that reads “Party’s in Progress, Bring Your Own Boos!”. Surround the sign and the rest of your grass space with tombstones, creating a makeshift graveyard. Scatter skeletons around as well to give your guests illusion that they’re stepping on real bones and graves. How frightening!

A final step to spice up your yard space is to use Halloween themed leaf bags. Not only are they decorative, but also functional for storing gathered leaves.

Guests will spend the most time inside the home, so it’s important to decorate this space to its fullest! Whether you live in a mansion or a one-bedroom apartment, here are some great ideas to dress up your entranceway or living room, starting with the walls and ceiling:

When your friends and family first walk in, have a little scene set up to spook them right away. To do so, drape some creepy cloth web right in front the doorway in a manner that your guests have to push it to the side to get through. Then, place two giant furry spiders crawling on the web. Finally in the center of the door, hang a flying ghost. Talk about making a grand entrance!

As for the rest of the home, decorate the walls with Halloween banners, cobwebs in the corners, and character cutouts like a giant skeleton.
From the ceiling, hang pumpkin, witch and spider lanterns sparingly. Vary the height from which you hang them for a modern twist.

To decorate other areas of the house:

Also if you have any stairs, either leading to your home or indoors, wrap festive garland or ribbon around the banisters for some added flair.

On October 15, Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey makes going green incredible fun at Lake Rickabear in Kinnelon through a day of science and healthy living exhibits – perfectly disguised as a green festival, Eco Trek. Eco Trek will include exhibits by girls, sponsors, and community partners, and will focus on healthy and green living initiatives that protect the environment, educate our citizens, and help make the world a better place. Last year’s event drew over 1,200 exhibitors and participants. FLOMO is a proud sponsor of Eco Trek. Our FLOMO employees are very excited to be volunteering again at this event and our Girl Scout Interns have been hard at work developing the games & educational displays that will be at our 3 tables. Here are some of the shots of the presentation that our interns gave our employees yesterday on what to expect at this year's event. We are all very excited!

Eco Trek is Girl Scouting at its best. Girls create interactive exhibits, teaching each other how to best care for themselves and the planet and showcased in a picturesque 332 acre camp. In addition to exploring the interactive expo and demonstrations by environmental professionals, participants will walk the 1.2 mile trail around Lake Rickabear while completing a Letterbox Scavenger Hunt.

For 99 years since Girl Scouts began in 1912, girls have been learning to “use resources wisely” as part of the Girl Scout leadership program. With Eco Trek, help Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey continues to inspire our 34,000 Girl Scouts throughout Bergen, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and north Warren counties. Event proceeds support GSNNJ’s three camp properties and outdoor programs.
